California Alpacas

CARE:   In general alpacas are very stoic and healthy but as with any animal they have basic needs that you need to be aware of.

ALPACA NEED...
  • A fenced area adequate to keep out predators.
  • A smaller enclosure for catching or handling.
  • Some type of shelter from rain, wind, or hot sun.
  • Good grass hay or a nice green pasture.
  • A mineral and feed suppliment.
  • A fresh water supply.
  • A well-fitted halter and lead rope.
  • Toenail clippers.
  • Wormers such as Panacur paste.
  • A first aid kit.
  • A vet who knows something about camelids.
  • A professional shearer (for once a year).
  • A platform scale for weighing (optional).
  • A trailer, van, or pickup truck with camper shell.

Alpacas are a herd animal and thus need at least one companion. So if you only wanted to start with one alpaca and slowly build your herd, then agisting (boarding) would be the way to go for you. We charge a reasonable fee of $3.00 per day. This covers basic care such as feeding, worming, and toenail clipping when needed. Extras would include such things as shots, vet visits, and shearing.
